Biography
Lars Johannesson, flutist, has lived in West Africa, Sweden, Holland, and the United States. He plays modern, baroque, romantic, and Irish styles of music, and indeed his great musical interest is that of learning about the performance practices of the various eras of music; how the players then played and thought about music, playing on the instruments of the time.
Lars studied orchestral flute with Tim Day at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he also discovered the Baroque ‘traverso’ and the charms of 18th century French music. This led to studies the Royal Conservatory of Music in Holland, with Wilbert Hazelzet. An interest in Irish folk music lends another style to his expressive toolkit, and one can occasionally find Lars at the local ‘session’, enjoying a pint along with the Jigs and Reels.
On recordings, you can hear his playing on a number of albums with Linda Burman-Hall and the ensemble Lux Musica, specializing in projects exploring connections between baroque/classical era music and the music of the British Isles, Sweden, Eastern Europe, Türkiye and India. Lars also plays on recordings on the folky Gourd Music label, out of Santa Cruz.
Lars lives in Santa Cruz California, performs with numerous West Coast modern and period instrument ensembles, and teaches privately also. He is on the faculty of the SFEMS Baroque Workshop, taking place in June in Berkeley, California. Recently he has taken charge of Espressivo Orchestra, a small intense orchestra performing in Santa Cruz and Monterey.
